My Favorite Way to Make Hash Brown Patties in the Air Fryer

A good hash brown needs to be super crispy. Period. Soggy hash browns just aren’t going to cut it, which is why I just love making these air fryer hash brown patties.

Of course, mornings are usually a little chaotic in my house. I don’t have time to babysit hash browns on the stove or let them cook forever in the oven, and the microwave is notorious for making hash browns limp. Thankfully, I discovered the joy of making hash brown patties in the air fryer for a healthier alternative to deep frying that turns out just as crispy!

I always keep a box of frozen hash browns in the freezer, so one morning, I threw a few in the air fryer. While they cooked, I whipped up some eggs and bacon on the stove, and I had a full breakfast ready for the family in about 15 minutes flat.

The hash browns had that perfect golden crust and were so irresistibly crispy, I immediately put another round of frozen hash brown patties in the air fryer. Sure enough, by the time my husband and kids finished their first ones, they all wanted seconds on the crispy air fryer hash browns!

Air Fry Hash Brown Patties Ingredients

  • Frozen hash brown patties – I like to use Ore Ida frozen hash brown patties, but another name brand or generic store brand will work. I’ve used Wegmans brand and they’ve been perfectly crispy too.

How to Cook Hash Brown Patties in the Air Fryer

STEP ONE: Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees.

STEP TWO: Place the patties in one layer in the air fryer basket or tray and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping them halfway through their cook time.

Tips for the Best Air Fryer Hash Brown Patties

  • For a crispier hash brown, I’ll air fry the hash brown patties for an extra 3-5 minutes. I just keep an eye on them so they don’t burn.
  • I always preheat the air fryer for the best results. It helps cook the hash brown patties evenly while crisping up the outsides.
  • Because hash brown patties already contain oil, they don’t need any extra oil spray. I don’t spray mine, and they crisp up beautifully every time, but if the tops ever looked dry when I flipped them, I’d spritz them with some avocado oil.
  • Air fry frozen hash brown patties in one even layer in the air fryer basket. This is how I get them extra crispy and make sure they don’t fall apart.
  • Let the hash brown patties rest for about 2 minutes before serving. They’ll crisp up as they cool.

Frozen Hash Brown Patties in the Air Fryer Variations and Substitutions

  • For a flavor boost, I’ll sprinkle paprika, chili powder, onion powder, and black pepper on the frozen hash browns before air frying.
  • To add some cheesy goodness, as soon as the hashbrowns finish air frying, I’ll sprinkle some cheddar cheese on top and close the basket. The residual heat is enough to melt the cheese.
  • My husband and I love spicy food, so we usually top ours with hot sauce. I sometimes add some red pepper flakes on top after flipping the hash browns in the air fryer basket!
  • When I want a pop of fresh flavor, I like to top air fried hash browns with sliced green onion or chopped fresh parsley.
  • To make homemade hash browns in the air fryer, I grate potatoes, repeatedly soak them in cold water and rinse until the water runs clear, and squeeze them dry with a cheesecloth. Next, I combine them with egg, flour, salt, and seasoning, then shape them into patties and cook them in the air fryer for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway through.

What to Serve with an Air Fryer Hash Brown Patty

For a classic breakfast, I serve air fryer hash browns as a side dish with eggs and air fryer bacon, oven baked turkey bacon, air fryer sausage, or sausage patties in the air fryer!

If I’m whipping up weekend brunch for the family, I love making air fryer pancakes, air fryer French toast sticks, or air fryer cinnamon rolls as well!

Air Fryer Hash Brown Patties FAQs

Can I stack the hash brown patties in the air fryer?

I don’t recommend stacking frozen hashbrown patties in the air fryer. The patties can get a little fragile once cooked, and stacking can make them fall apart. I recommend putting them in a single layer in the air fryer basket.

Do I need to preheat my air fryer?

I always preheat my air fryer to make frozen hash browns. Preheating helps the patties start crisping up right away and gives them a better texture, so I think it’s worth waiting a few minutes!

How should I store leftover air fryer hash brown patties?

I store leftover hash browns in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, I just pop them back in the air fryer at 350 degrees for a few minutes until they’re warm and crispy again.
