Air Fryer Okra

My air fryer okra comes out golden, crispy, and completely addictive! I use fresh okra slices and coat them in a seasoned breading so each piece gets oh-so-crunchy.

My Crispy Recipe for Okra in the Air Fryer

The first time I brought home okra from the farmer’s market, my husband Ben was extremely skeptical. He remembered okra as a slimy vegetable he hated as a kid, but I told him to just wait until he tried my air fryer okra. It would change his mind.

I prepped the recipe very similarly to how my grandmother used to make it when she would pan-fry okra with cornmeal. My plan was to avoid the messy oil splatters but still get that same unbelievable crunch with the help of the air fryer, unlike when I’ve tried to make it in the oven.

Sure enough, the breading got perfectly crispy and golden while the okra inside stayed tender. I served the first batch to my kids with some ranch dressing for dipping, and they went crazy for it!

That gave my husband the courage to try one, and… well… the rest is history. Now he asks for air fried okra whenever okra is in season!

Fried Okra in the Air Fryer Ingredients

  • Okra – I like to use fresh okra. The texture always gets nice and tender instead of soggy and slimy. If I want to use frozen okra, I just use the already breaded kind to heat up.
  • Flour – All-purpose flour helps the egg mixture stick to the okra slices. I coat everything in a bowl to minimize the mess.
  • Eggs – These act as the glue that holds the breading together.
  • Cornmeal – I never skip the cornmeal! This adds that classic Southern-style crunch and texture.
  • Breadcrumbs – I use regular or Panko depending on what I have on hand.
  • Paprika – I love how this adds a little color and that mild smoky flavor to the breading.
  • Salt – I sprinkle a little on the okra before and after cooking to really enhance the flavor.
  • Cayenne – Optional but I love adding a pinch to give the okra a hint of heat.

How to Make Air Fryer Okra

STEP ONE: Preheat the air fryer to 380 degrees.

STEP TWO: Clean and cut the fresh okra into 1/2 -inch thick slices, removing the top and bottom of each okra piece.

STEP THREE: Place the flour in one bowl, the eggs, whisked, in a second bowl, and the cornmeal, breadcrumbs, paprika, sea salt, and cayenne pepper (if using) in a third bowl.

STEP FOUR: Dip the okra into the flour mixture, then the egg, and lastly the cornmeal mixture coating it on all sides each time. Repeat with all okra pieces

STEP FIVE: Place the okra into the air fryer basket or tray and spritz them with some oil or cooking spray, then cook them for 7 to 8 minutes.

Tips For the Best air Fryer Fried Okra

  • Slice the okra evenly for consistent cooking. I aim for ½-inch pieces so they don’t overcook.
  • Dry the okra slices well before breading. I pat mine with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
  • I use a fork to dip the okra into each bowl. It goes much faster!
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. I cook mine in batches so the okra air fries and gets crispy instead of steaming.
  • I always make extra and freeze the rest for later. The air fryer is perfect for heating fried okra straight from frozen, so they make a great snack.

Air Fried Okra Variations and Substitutions

  • Toss garlic powder or onion powder in with the breading mix for more flavor. I do this when I want a savory snack.
  • Add Cajun seasoning for a spicy twist that goes really well with dips. My husband, the okra convert, loves this version!
  • Serve with ranch, honey mustard, or spicy mayo for dipping. I like switching up the sauces depending on the meal.
  • Try smoked paprika instead of regular for a deeper flavor. I use this version for barbecue nights.
  • Mix in parmesan cheese with the breadcrumbs before coating. It gives the air fried okra a salty, nutty edge.

What to Serve with Okra in the Air Fryer

Air fryer fried okra is a take on a southern classic, so I love serving it alongside air fryer fried chicken, chicken fried chicken, or air fryer chicken fried steak!

But I also enjoy pairing this crispy, crunchy vegetable with air fryer pork chops, air fryer baby back ribs, or air fryer meatloaf.
