Air Fryer Toast

My easy way to make air fryer toast is a breakfast-time staple in my house! I use it to get delicious, crispy, golden bread without having to drag out my toaster.

My Easy Way to Make Toast in the Air Fryer

The first time I made air fryer toast was the morning after a sleepover my kids had with their cousins. I was out of room in the toaster for all the orders coming in, and I didn’t feel like heating up the oven or getting out the skillet.

I started putting a few slices in the air fryer just to keep up, and I have to admit I was a little surprised when they came out so perfectly toasty. The air fryer got the bread golden brown with a nice crunch on the outside and a soft inside, plus it was even faster than the toaster!

Once the kids were fed, I used the air fryer to make myself some avocado toast, and it was so good, it made all the morning chaos worth it. I’ve barely touched my toaster since!

Can an Air Fryer Replace a Toaster?

For me, my air fryer has completely replaced both my toaster and toaster oven! The air fryer toasts bread more evenly, and I like that I can make more than two pieces at a time. It’s also way easier to keep clean than a crumb-filled toaster! Both a basket-style air fryer and an oven-style air fryer work great to toast bread.

Ingredients needed to air fry toast.

Air Fry Toast Ingredients

  • Bread – I usually go with plain white sandwich bread, but I’ve also used whole wheat, sourdough, and even thick slices of Texas toast. Anything works!
  • Toppings of your choice – I like butter and jam or peanut butter and banana, but I’ve also done cream cheese, cinnamon sugar, avocado, and even cheddar with eggs on top for an open-faced breakfast sandwich!

Tips for the Best Air Fryer Toast

  • Preheating the air fryer helps the bread start toasting right away, which gets the outside golden brown without drying out the inside. I never skip the preheating step!
  • I lay the bread in a single layer so the air can properly circulate around each slice. I can usually fit 4 slices in my air fryer basket.
  • I adjust the cooking time depending on the bread I’m using. Thin slices crisp quickly while thicker slices like Texas toast take longer.
  • Flipping the bread halfway through the cooking time helps me get it evenly toasted on both sides. I usually flip mine at the 2-minute mark.
  • I like to have my toppings ready so I can spread them while the toast is still hot.

What to Serve With Toast in the Air Fryer

I love serving air fryer toast with a full spread of fresh fruit, jams or jellies, peanut and almond butter, regular butter, and sometimes even cinnamon and powdered sugar!

When I’m in the mood for a classic breakfast, I’ll whip up some air fryer bacon, air fryer breakfast potatoes, and air fryer scrambled eggs to enjoy with my toast.

Best Toppings for Air Fry Toast

My go-to is butter and jam, but my kids love almond butter with banana. My husband is more of a savory guy, so he likes to add cheddar cheese, sometimes a slice of tomato, and then one or two fried eggs on top.

When I want something filling, I always go for mashed avocado on air fryer toasted wheat bread with red pepper flakes. For a sweet treat, my kids love when I sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on buttered toast!

Air Fryer Toast FAQs

What kind of bread can go in the air fryer?

Any kind or variation or slice of bread! I’ve used regular sandwich bread, sourdough, gluten-free slices, low-carb bread, Texas toast, and even bagels. The air fryer gives each one a crispy edge while keeping the inside soft. I just make sure to adjust the cooking time based on the thickness of whatever I’m toasting.

What if my bread is flying around in the air fryer?

That happens to me sometimes when I use very light or thin bread. In this case, I just weigh it down with a trivet or use a small wire rack on top of the slice until it starts to toast. After a minute or so, it’ll be heavy enough to stay in place on its own.

How should I store leftover air fryer toast?

There’s rarely leftover toast in my house, but when I have some extra slices, I let them cool completely before storing them in an airtight container. I keep the toast on the counter if I’m going to eat it within a day or store it in the fridge for up to 3 days.

How should I reheat leftover toast in the air fryer?

To reheat leftover toast, I preheat my air fryer to 400 degrees F, then pop the slices back in the air fryer. 1-2 minutes is all it takes to bring back the crunch without drying out the bread!
